Submarine
Submarine opening film-
Project-
We had to replicate the opening titles (from the beginning
to the prologue) of the film ‘Submarine’.
Group-
Holly Gunton and me.
Casting-
We found casting particularly difficult as we wanted someone
who had had previous acting experience. We thought this was essential as, being
the only actor, the character had to be performed well and confidently. We
struggled to find any male actors with acting experience that we thought would fit
the role. It was due to this that we decided not to restrain our casting to
just male actors. We then decided to cast Rose Mason. This is not only because
we thought she suited the role, but also due to her extensive acting experience
and, having worked with her before during our ‘Love Actually’ film, her
attitude towards working in front of a camera.
Location-
We decided on location quite quickly, not having many
options available. We chose to film in my bedroom as it was the easiest to film
in and had lots of posters and pictures on the walls. However I don’t think it
was a good choice as it didn’t successfully convey the genre or era of the
play.
Costume-
For costume, we kept it as close to that of Submarine as
possible (despite the clothes being more feminine). Rose wore a black turtle
neck and cardigan, with black trousers. And wore a plain grey coat when
outside. Maintaining the dark clothes of the original film seemed important as
his plain and dark clothes were very relevant to his character and the plot
(not sticking out, finding his character etc.).
The filming process-
The filming process was very challenging, despite being
minimal. This was due to the time of day we were able to film at having very
unpredictable lighting: we had to wait for the sun to come back out on many
occasions. There was also an issue with the section of the pan where we went
down as it was incredibly difficult to stop the camera jumping. Despite this,
the other sections of the pan went quite well and didn’t jump at all. Also, I
thought the outside shots of Rose and the sea shots worked well and looked
effective. However, due to weather conditions, it was a challenge to get steady
shots at Yarmouth.
Editing-
Editing was quite a struggle due to various issues we had
with the editing programme. First we created the title sequences. These went
very well and we were able to accurately replicate the colour, font and letter
spacing used in the original. We then inserted the footage. Whilst there were
some issues syncing the audio from the original clip that we used, and two
scenes ended up quite dark; we were mostly able to rectify this and it was, for
the most part, without problem. We then put in the idents we used from the
original film. This went well apart from some more issues with syncing the
corresponding audio. We then created our own ident. We struggled to get the gif
to move on premier pro and when we eventually managed to get it working, we found
it was very pixelated yet couldn’t fix it.
Final Product-
The final film was of reasonable quality. The audio, after much effort, was in sync, and the idents went really well. The gif, despite being very pixelated, was also quite successful. However, we couldn’t fix the two dark scenes, one scene shakes a lot at the end (something that appeared due to issues in the editing process) and banners kept appearing over various shots (both of which we also couldn't fix). Due to this we weren’t as happy with the overall outcome as we could have been.
