Character Profile
Name: Elaine
Age: 34
Nationality: Spanish
Profession: Fortune Teller
Marital Status: Unmarried
How do they speak?
They’re very articulate, using long, complex vocabulary and
precise grammar. They are well educated and like to show this off in their
speech. They don’t speak loudly but are very clear and precise and are always
sure of what they’re saying: they only speak when necessary.
What are they like as a person?
They can be quite pessimistic sometimes, although would
consider themselves a ‘realist’. They’re quite a quiet natured person with a
closed off demeanour making them seem hostile to some. They don’t believe very
strongly in fate and aren’t very adventurous (until a certain point in the
plot). They don’t trust easily and, due to this, are very conscious of other
peoples’ actions and even minor idiosyncrasies.
What do they like and dislike?
They don’t watch TV, or follow sport, and only rarely listen
to music. However, they are very good at drawing and have a fascination for
art, her most reassured possession is her sketch book. They also love books,
particularly fairy tales; they’re favourites being ‘The Snow Queen’ and ‘Hansel
and Gretel’.
What about their past?
They’re an only child who was home schooled, so was quite
isolated. Her parents disappeared when she was 17 and were never found. Her Aunt
looked after her and taught her about fortune telling until she turned 26 and her
Aunt passed away. She then returned to her original family home on the
outskirts of the woods.
What do they do?
She continues fortune telling despite not believing her Aunt
as she feels obligated to continue the family tradition. She earns only just
enough to get by, but isn’t very materialistic so doesn’t see this as an issue.
She often feels guilty and fraudulent because she can’t actually fortune tell
(until a certain point in the plot). She spends all her spare time drawing,
reading or going through the boxes in the attic full of her parents’ strange possessions.
Where do they live?
She lives in an old, large, rickety, dilapidated house (which
she is still trying to organise). Whilst there is no garden, it is on top of hill
on the edge of a vast, dark forest. All other houses are at the bottom of the
hill. The house is full to the brim of boxes and trinkets and peculiar curiosities
of her parents’. Despite the many items, the house is very clean and organised.
However, this organisation does not apply to the attic, which is full of boxes
and trunks full of things she has yet to sort through. She decided to go back
there in order to do this organisation and because she hopes to find, at the very
least, a reason for her parents disappearance.
Who do they know?
As previously mentioned, they were influenced greatly by
their Aunt (May) and parents (although mainly their disappearance). She doesn’t
have a boss (which she sees as a good thing as she is very independent and
struggles taking orders) and, other than her customers (often quite frantic,
cryptic, and bizarre characters), she doesn’t really see or know anyone but
much prefers her secluded lifestyle. Her customers look to her with reverence
(only increasing her guilt), and see her as almost omniscient.
