Preliminary task:
Our preliminary task:
‘continuity task involving filming and editing a character
opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another
character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.
The task should demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot
and the 180 degree rule.’
Match on action:
A film editing technique whereby the editor cuts from one shot
to another that matches the first’s action.
180 degree rule:
When you film a scene using separate shots, it's important that people understand where everything in the scene is. The 180 degree rule ensures this as you only film within a semicircle as opposed to 360 degrees.
180 degree rule:
When you film a scene using separate shots, it's important that people understand where everything in the scene is. The 180 degree rule ensures this as you only film within a semicircle as opposed to 360 degrees.
Shot reverse
shot:
A technique where
one character is shown looking at another character, and then the first is
shown looking back.
Ideas and
casting-
Due to the task
we decided to keep our plot simple; it being our first day of sixth form, our
characters greeted each other and asked how their first day was going. This also
helped with casting as no matter who we chose the conversation would be
realistic due to its literal nature. We decided to set it in the school’s drama
studio. This meant we had a lot of open space to film in and a seating area for
our characters. For the casting, we chose people we knew got on well together, who
were confident and were willing to participate.
Filming-
I was
particularly looking forward to the filming aspect of the project, and found it
very interesting, however, I had never made a short film before so I wasn’t very
sure I was doing it correctly. Despite this, I really enjoyed it, and found
doing simple things, such as following a character with the camera, became
easier and looked better as we went along.
Editing-
During editing,
our group split into two; one half researching how to use ‘Adobe Premier Pro’
and the other using it to edit our film. I was working on the computer to edit,
and at first found it very complicated and difficult to understand. Whilst we
only used the very basics in order to put our various scenes together, and
there are lots of improvements that could be made, by the end it had definitely
gotten a bit easier to use.
