Mise-en-scene-

(everything visible in a film still e.g. setting, lighting, props and actors.)

Setting:

'a poor destitute couple sit in a room in the 17th century'

The room would be dimly lit and small, the only light coming from a single, small window. It would seem quite musky and damp, emphasised by the unlit fireplace that would be the house's only heat source. It would be sparsely furnished and any furniture they did have would be wooden, old and battered. This would consist of a small, round table, and two clearly worn chairs. Small trinkets and photographs are scattered with no order on the small mantelpiece above the fireplace, covered in a film of soot.

'a middle class couple in the 1940's'

Quite a lavishly decorated, clean and bright, open space. Patriotic items such as flags and bunting are hung proudly on the walls along with the blatantly treasured family photographs. One in particular stands out from the rest: a photo of a young man in an army uniform.
