Film Language Continued/ Mise-en-scene Setting Contunued
The green mile:

My notes-
I think the setting is effective as it juxtaposes the genre:
fantasy. This is as there are magical elements, but the environment it is set
within creates a sort of ‘magical realism’, and means the audience doesn’t
expect anything out of the ordinary in the beginning (the stage at which the
clip is set). The setting itself appears cold and dark, as the chipped paint on
the brick walls and use of dark shades of paint rather than any vibrant colours,
create a stale and uncomfortable atmosphere. This illustrates the dark nature
of the film and instils an empathy for (some of) the prisoners in the audience.
This is further exploited by the director as the lack of windows in the
building (only one is apparent), evokes a feeling of being trapped and makes
the setting quite claustrophobic. This claustrophobia is emphasized by the contrastingly
vast and open setting seen outside of the prison building. By having one of the
guards look through a grate at this setting it not only provides a clear demonstration
of this contrast, but also the detachment the prisoners have from the outside
world, and could also symbolise the fact that they can’t see clearly. When the
prisoner is getting out of the van, the walls frame the prisoners seen outside.
This makes them the centre of focus but also boxes them in, therefore imprisoning
them.
