Film Language Continued/ Mise-en-scene, Setting Continued
Notes on a clip from ‘The Last King of Scotland’ (his
journey from the mission to the president’s residence):
- Describe the mission station where the journey begins. What impressions do you have about the mission? It’s deep in the rainforest, and therefore very isolated. It appears old, worn, decrepit, and clearly very used. It’s bare of sentimental items and sparsely furnished. Despite being secluded, it is also very exposed. Evidence of this is that there are no curtains and he is woken up by someone at the window.
- What other locations are shown as Nicholas looks out of the window of the car? How does each location that he sees build up to his arrival in the capital? The rainforest, a narrow dust road, a small village, a larger village, and finally the capital itself. There is a population, urbanisation and affluence increase at every ‘stage’/ setting change.
- How does the capital city setting at the end of his journey contrast with the mission at the beginning? It’s much more urban and is the most populated. The colours are less vibrant and green, and instead pale blues and whites. It appears more prosperous as there is blatantly more wealth there than in the other settings.
